Apprenticeships - What is it all about?

Apprenticeships offer accredited vocational training while you work. They can provide the equivalent of GCSE qualifications right through to degree level. They allow you to gain specific industry knowledge and qualifications, with real work experience for your chosen career. You are paid whilst you study with usually about four days in a work environment and one day at a related educational organisation.

Apprenticeships range from around twelve months and can last up to six years, depending on your industry and level of qualification being offered.

National Apprenticeship Service

The National Apprenticeship Service supports and co-ordinates the delivery of apprenticeships throughout England. New higher apprenticeships range from level 4-7, giving you the equivalent of foundation degree to master's degree level. Search and apply for vacancies online and get started on your way to an apprenticeship.

Go to the Careersbox website to find out more about apprenticeships, watch videos of people talking about their jobs and learn about the latest careers news and information. Search companies by industry or name and see what they have to offer you.

Watch video case studies of apprentices in a variety of industries.

Regional Apprenticeships

The South East Apprenticeship Company (SEAC) is an innovative service for employers and apprentices based in the south-east.  It is one of several regional Apprenticeship Training Agencies operating across England.

The McDonalds apprenticeships are modelled on the NVQs and account for 5 GCSES grades A*-C. They work with a combination of practical training and traditional Maths and English skills applied in the work environment. Apprentices show written communication through work books which demonstrate their Maths and English skills; along with crew development programmes - their work based training on the shop floor.

Any McDonald’s employee can get on the programme even if they don't have Maths and/or English GCSE.  After completing the programme successfully, an independent assessor will award employees with a nationally recognised certificate.
