Our Better In School programme provides pupils the opportunity to develop self-regulation and emotional literacy. Our project aims to provide a trauma informed approach to support primary school pupils at risk of being excluded. We are looking to offer early intervention to support pupils through a full day program.
Pupils will spend two hours on activities which helps pupils understand how to manage their emotions, develop coping strategies, understand how to build relationships and become more connected, understand how to look after their wellbeing, help build self-esteem, and develop resilience. This is followed by sensory play and meditation/yoga sessions which are recognised to have a therapeutic benefit, allowing them to develop their interoception, proprioceptive and vestibular senses. This helps pupils to organise their senses; sensory organisation is fundamental for enabling and supporting learning and improves self-regulation. Having sensory breaks, physical activity and other activities, such as playing a musical instrument, that promote left-right brain coordination allows for the rebuilding of neural connections in the brain. This also increases the activity in the hippocampus which regulates and help reduce the stress response. We aim to work with up to 10 pupils in each cohort over an 8-week period. This will be followed by a celebration event where families and pupils can come together to celebrate their efforts giving them a sense of achievement and recognition. Emotional self-regulation work is run by trained practitioners, with sensory play offered by a trauma trained Children’s Play Worker and yoga and meditation offered by a qualified instructor with experience in therapeutic play. |
