I left school at Key Stage 4 and went straight into employment. Starting out with roles in the retail sector and then into customer service. Finally, I took a job as a labourer in the construction industry, learning the skills required to become a builder.

With several years experience behind me and excellent references, I applied for a job as a wood stove fitter and gained my Hetas and Corgi registration. When the company closed down, I made the decision to set up on my own. Now after just 4 years, I run a successful business with several employees.

Throughout my time at sixth form college, I felt there was a decisive lack of support and guidance for any student who wanted to make the decision to go straight into the working world. There were endless career days, guest speaker and open days, but they were all encouraging you to go to university. We spent countless hours developing our personal statements and yet not once were we taught practical skills, like how to write a CV.

I was one of about three people that decided against the university option. I felt that it was a logical decision to stop from getting myself into tens of thousands of pounds worth of debt. I feel there should be more help for those who, like me, don’t want to take this route and would like to go straight into work.

Since leaving school I have managed to secure myself various jobs and currently work as a Sales Negotiator for a successful estate agency. I have learned, through hands-on experience, about the legal aspects of purchasing a property, valuations, customer service and most importantly, the skill of diplomacy.

I started working as a secretary after completing the Australian equivalent of A levels. After having my 2 children, I wanted to work part-time and took a job as a Learning Support Assistant in a primary school. I loved working with children and was then offered a new job within a pre-school setting. I gained NVQ Level 3 in Early Years and then, progressed to being Deputy Supervisor.

I decided to start a Foundation Degree (Level 4/5), and then went on to complete a BA Hons degree, again in Early Years. During all my studies, I have continued working and gained a position as a Manager at a pre-school. I am now looking for roles as a Children Services Advisor which means I oversee all work and provision in a number of nurseries.

I started my working life as a sales person working with a variety of retail and utility companies. I left education at the age of 18, having studied for a BTec in Business Studies.

I used my networking skills and managed to secure a role with Foxtons Estate Agents. The interview process was really tough, with a formal interview followed by an informal 'meet and greet.' I became the No.1 trainee in 4 months - a record time!

I worked for 9 years as an estate agent, working my way up into senior management roles. I finally decided to set up on my own and have never looked back.

Recruitment agencies

Choose agencies carefully by finding out the industry sectors they cover. Remember, they receive hundreds of CVs everyday, so make personal contact by phone or arrange a meeting. They are more likely to remember you if you do.
